Big Picture - Adobe Reader 8.0 not recognised

Problem:
After updating to Adobe Reader 8.0, previously working installations of 'Big Picture' E Big Books will not launch correctly, citing that Adobe Reader 6.02 or later is required and inviting you to install this older version.

Screen grab of error message on screen

Affects:
All BBC Big Picture E Big Books after installation of Adobe Reader 8.0

Cause:
Incorrectly set or deleted actions for file type 'PDF' cause the application to not recognise the availability of the Adobe Reader software.

Solution:
Amend the shortcut to link directly to the
\Big Picture E book\BigPicture.pdf and create a new shortcut to the Resources folder.

OR

Manually add/configure the file type action 'Open' to execute AcroRd32.exe (usually in C:Program filesAdobeReader 8.0Reader)

e.g.

  • Open a new folder and from the menu select 'Tools' > 'Folder Options' then select the 'File Types' tab
  • Locate the entry in the list for PDF (hint - click on the first entry and press 'P')
  • Click 'Advanced' (or if not visible, first click 'Restore' then 'Advanced'.) (1)
  • If there is an Action labelled 'Open', then select it and click 'Edit'. If there is no 'Open' action present, then click 'New' (2)and create a new Action and call it 'Open'. (3)
  • Ensure that the application used to perform the action correctly resolves to the installed version of Adobe Reader. (4)

Step by step procedure for Folder option

OR

Download and double-click the registry file (configured for a default C: drive installation of Adobe Reader) > Here < (432 bytes)

Note - you should be comfortable with making modifications to the registry. Edit the .reg file in Notepad before applying it if you have installed Adobe Reader to a location path other than that indicated within the file.
