KnowledgeBox does not need an HTTP proxy server to run. Often times, however KnowledgeBox needs to co-exist with a proxy/caching server within the network environment. This caching server may in fact be installed on the same hardware as the KnowledgeBox server software, or may reside on another server on the LAN or upstream of the Internet link.
Because KnowledgeBox is always installed on the schools LAN itself, all browsers that use a proxy server should be instructed to NOT use the proxy server when accessing the KnowledgeBox as this generates unnecessary trafic on the nework and slows the KnowledgeBox down considerably.
This is done by setting what is known as a "proxy exception". In Internet Explorer this setting is made as follows:
- Click Tools > Internet Options on the menu
- Click the Connections tab in the Internet Options
- Click LAN Settings
- Check the Use a proxy server for your LAN checkbox
- Ensure that the proxy hostname or IP address as well as the port number are correctly entered
- Click the Advanced button
- In the Exceptions field enter the IP address of the KnowledgeBox on your LAN. Note, if there is existing data in this field, simply add a semi-colon (;) to the last item in this field and then append your KnowledgeBox's IP address.
- Click OK until you are returned to the browser window.
The process for Mozilla, Netstape Navigator or Safari is similar.
