Setting up Drive Mapping

Overview of operation and configuration

These instructions cover setup of file shares on CachePilot for XP and Windows 98 clients. Check that the appropriate 0000759 software patch (NUB) has been applied to the CachePilot for this feature or an appropriate level of  CachePilot software which includes this functionality is in use.

The installer, using the Admin account, initially sets up the shares on the CachePilot with a single letter password e.g. ‘e’. He then logs on to each of user accounts and removes the password completely.

In daily school use, the file share access is entirely dependent on what has been mapped on a particular PC and there is no requirement for staff or pupils to submit passwords at any stage.

The file shares staff, pupils and tpool and are read/write, while pool is a read only variant of tpool.

Configuration steps

Note: Step 1 can be eliminated on customer specific manufactured units as they may be pre-loaded at the factory thus eliminating this stage of the process. Step 1 will be required on generic CachePilot units that have not had these users added prior to unit shipment.

Step 1 – CachePilot Configuration

Browse to https://cachepilot/secure-admin and logon as the CachePilot Admin in the normal fashion.

Create four users from the CachePilot menus, namely:-

staff

pupils

pool

tpool

To create a user click on the side bar button User Accounts then the top bar button Users. Then click Add. Go through the process adding each of the four usernames and setting each up with the same password ‘e’ and putting them in the open category.

Select the CachePilot top bar button File sharing.  Highlight the user pool and then click the edit button.  Click on intranet files and enter files in the box, then click on read only as shown in the screen shot below. Do the same for tpool but do not click on read only.

The screen shot below shows all four users added. Note the configuration of pool and tpool, versus pupils and staff.

Logoff from the Admin account. Next login to each user account in turn (staff, pupil, pool, and tpool) and remove the e password. The screen shot below shows the main menu having logged on as one of these users. Select the top link Change user password.

Enter the current password e, leave the other fields blank, then click OK. This has the effect of removing any password from this user account.

Step 2 – PC Configuration

There are two configurations required, one for a teacher’s PC and one for a pupil’s PC.

Teacher’s PC

Select (use ‘My computer’ on XP or on Windows 98 use Windows Explorer), tools then map drive.  Select a drive letter, then enter cachepilotstaff and select reconnect at logon.  Click finish.

Repeat this step using a different drive letter for cachepilottpool

Pupil’s PC

Select (use ‘My computer’ on XP or on Windows 98 use Windows Explorer), tools then map drive.  Select a drive letter, then enter cachepilotpupils and select ‘reconnect at logon’.  Click finish.

Repeat this step using a different drive letter for
cachepilotpool

The screenshot below shows the mapping of cachepilotpool to drive W: and also note the Reconnect at logon option is ticked.

The screenshot below shows the results of mapping drives for pool, tpool, staff and pupils. (note mapping for school users would not normally have all four drives)
