How do I connect into my Knowledgebox remotely via Putty?
This article applies to:

KnowledgeBox version: 1.0

Refer to the glossary for an explanation of putty. Putty will only work on KnowledgeBoxes that run on the following hardware types, Appliansys Basic (Compact or King Yung) and all Equiinet Cachepilots, be it Standard, Essex or Slamnet images. Appliansys Cacheboxes do not have SSH but they do have telnet which can also allow a remote connection via Putty, but usually, by default this service is turned off for security reasons, so chances are this will not work.

Putty is a free program and can be download from the following link http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

Download the correct executable file for the operating system that you are using. e.g. if you are using windows 98, scroll down to the Binaries section and look for putty.exe which is under the "For Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP on Intel x86" section. Right click on the link and save the file to the desktop or to a location that you prefer. Putty is only 360KB in size, so it normally is a quick download.

Once downloaded, double click on putty (no installation necessary). The screenshot below shows the initial putty screen.

Type in the IP address of the KnowledgeBox server in the edit box labelled “Host Name” (in this example we have used 10.150.127.21). Leave the Protocol setting as SSH which is by default on port 22, so no need to change the port. If it is an Appliansys Cachebox that you are trying to connect to, then set it to Telnet which is on port 23 (just a reminder, by default telnet is not enabled on the Appliansys Cachebox, so it will probably not work)

Click on the Open button. Click yes to any message that appears. You now have a remote terminal to the KnowledgeBox server from and be offered login prompt. Login as root and type in the respective password for the type of box being used. Call customer services for the password on 0800 376 8376. The last line on the screen will be a prompt that looks similar to "root@knowledgebox:~#"

This terminal is useful in diagnosing and resolving problems on the Knowledgebox.
