Knowledge Base CD-ROMS Common ActiveBook Errors

Common ActiveBook Errors

Problem:
When launching the application you see the normal application window, but it is then filled with white - occasionally with a numeric percentage displayed in the top left corner - e.g. 98%.

Alternatively, you may receive an MSVCR80.dll error such as that below:

Error message

Cause:
There are several potential causes, the most common are:

  • Running the software from a UNC share (check the shortcut properties).
  • Running the software when logged in as an ActiveDirectory domain user that has the folder %APPDATA% redirected to a server.
  • Executing the software with very limited user privileges.
  • Error trapping on buffer overflow
  • .NET framework 2.0 dll mapping (typically presents as Office 2007 and/or Windows Defender MSVCR80.DLL issue)
  • Execution on Windows Vista

Solution:
Note - the following solutions are for site-licenced products.
In most cases, you will simply be able to run the product from a local (C: drive installation.)
Alternatively, use a mapped network drive to host the applications. See http://centraal.uk.knowledgebox.com/kbase/idx/40/181/article/ for information on hiding your mapped drives if required.

Download the relevant file listed below, unzip the file to a new folder and follow the directions in the readme file -

Note these downloads may contain files/folders with invisible attributes set - please ensure you change the folder view to show hidden files.

You need to make sure you are able to view hidden files and folders. To make them visible do the following:

    1. Go to “My Computer”
    2. On the top menu, go to “Tools” then “Folder Options”
    3. Click on the “View” tab
    4. Under the “Advanced settings” select the “Show hidden files and folders” button
    5. Click “Apply” then “OK”

Once this is done you need to do the following:

    1. Put the disc into your cd drive and exit any autorun windows
    2. Go to My Computer
    3. On the CD icon right click and on the menu that appears choose “Explore”
    4. You will need to copy the contents of the cd to your hard drive.  Select all the files, then right click and select “Copy”.
    5. Create a folder somewhere on your hard drive (eg C:Program Files) and paste the files into it.
    6. Download the relevant zip files from the links above and extract the contents
    7. In the folder where the contents of the cd were copied, open the folder named AB
    8. Copy all the extracted files to the AB folder, clicking “yes” to any prompts asking whether you would like to overwrite existing files
